Backing boards
Q Are Many People No Longer Using
MDF Board for Backing Pictures in View of the Health
Scares and the Various Alternatives Now Available?
No. Whilst there is an element of risk in the use of
MDF ("smooth both sides"/SBS board), it is
chiefly associated with volume processing, where power
saws and routers etc. are used. In the frameshop, using
blades or guillotines, sensible housekeeping should
suffice. There are other reasons for seeking alternatives
to MDF: it is highly acidic, moisture absorbent, and
sheds particles. Alternatives are Foamboards
and Corrugated
Boards.
